India's natural stone exports crossed $2.08 billion in 2022–23. Granite alone — from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, and Rajasthan — accounted for $1.56 billion of that. The country supplies over 200 granite varieties and holds more than 20% of the world's granite resources. If you're specifying or procuring stone for construction, hospitality, or landscaping internationally, at some point you'll be looking at an Indian supplier.
The problem most first-time importers run into isn't the stone quality — it's the paperwork, the port choice, the container maths, and the surprise costs that appear after they've already paid. This guide walks through the full process from sample approval to cleared customs at destination.
Step 1 — Supplier Qualification
Before you request a quotation, verify two things: the supplier holds an IEC (Import Export Code) issued by India's DGFT, and they are registered for GST. An IEC is a 10-digit number that all legitimate Indian exporters must hold — it's not optional. If a supplier can't produce it, they're either trading through an intermediary (adding cost) or they're not a registered exporter at all.
Membership in CAPEXIL (the Council for Export Promotion of Capital Goods and Allied Products) or CDOS (Centre for Development of Stones, a Government of India recognised body) indicates a supplier operates within the formal trade ecosystem. These memberships aren't mandatory, but they signal a supplier that exports regularly and stays current with documentation requirements.
Step 2 — Sample Approval and Specification
Always specify the following in writing before confirming an order:
- —Stone type, variety name, and mine origin (not just "white marble" — specify "Makrana Albeta White, Nagaur district")
- —Thickness in mm (2cm is standard for EU/Asia; 3cm for USA)
- —Finish (polished, honed, flamed, brushed, etc.)
- —Slab size or tile dimensions, plus acceptable tolerance (±2mm is standard)
- —Edge profile if tiles
- —Minimum compressive strength and maximum water absorption — request lab certificate
- —Bundle count and slabs per bundle for slab orders
Natural stone varies batch to batch. Approve a physical sample — not just photos. For first orders above $10,000 in value, consider commissioning a third-party pre-shipment inspection from SGS, Bureau Veritas, or a local equivalent. The inspection cost ($300–$600) is negligible against the cost of a full container of off-spec stone arriving at your port.
Step 3 — Choose Your Incoterm
For first-time importers: request CIF (Cost, Insurance, Freight) to your nearest port. The supplier handles Indian export clearance, ocean freight, and basic insurance. You deal with destination port charges onward.
For experienced importers with a freight forwarder relationship: request FOB (Free on Board) at your preferred Indian port. You control the shipping line, the schedule, and — critically — the insurance quality. CIF includes minimum insurance (ICC-C clauses) that covers catastrophic loss but not handling damage or partial losses.
The Export Documents — What to Demand
A legitimate stone export from India produces this document set. If your supplier cannot provide any of these, escalate before payment:
| Document | What It Is | Issued By |
|---|---|---|
| Commercial Invoice | Final sales contract with HS code, values, product description | Exporter |
| Packing List | Box-by-box inventory — dimensions, weights, bundle numbers | Exporter |
| Bill of Lading (B/L) | Proof of cargo handover to shipping line; title document; essential for customs | Shipping line |
| Shipping Bill | Indian export customs clearance; filed on ICEGATE portal | Indian Customs via exporter |
| Certificate of Origin (COO) | Certifies Indian origin; needed for preferential duty rates in many countries | Chamber of Commerce / CAPEXIL |
| Fumigation Certificate | Mandatory for wooden crates/pallets (ISPM-15 standard) — USA, Australia require this | Licensed fumigation agency |
| Insurance Certificate | Marine insurance policy (scope depends on Incoterm) | Insurance company |
| Quality / Lab Report | Water absorption, density, compressive strength test results | NABL-accredited lab |
USA-bound shipments: fumigation is critical
US Customs and Border Protection requires ISPM-15 compliant fumigation on all wooden packaging. Missing or invalid fumigation certificates will result in your container being held at the port or returned. Verify the certificate is dated correctly and signed by a licensed fumigator before the container is sealed.

Port Selection — Which Port for Which Destination
For stone originating in Rajasthan (Jaipur, Makrana, Jodhpur, Kishangarh), two ports dominate:
| Port | Distance from Jaipur | Best For | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mundra (Gujarat) | ~620 km | Middle East, Europe, North Africa | India's largest private port; fast turnaround; preferred for Rajasthan stone |
| Kandla / Deendayal (Gujarat) | ~650 km | Middle East, Africa | Good for bulk cargo; lower terminal handling charges |
| Nhava Sheva / JNPT (Mumbai) | ~1,100 km | USA, Europe, East Asia | Highest throughput port; more shipping line options |
| Chennai | ~1,800 km | Southeast Asia, Australia | Impractical for Rajasthan stone; better for South India granite |
Container Maths — The Weight Limit Problem
This surprises most first-time stone importers: a 40-foot container does not hold twice the stone of a 20-foot container. Both have nearly identical maximum payload weights (~28 metric tonnes), because stone is so dense that you hit the weight limit long before you fill the volume.
| Container | Max Payload | Practical Stone Load | Granite Slabs (330×210cm, 2cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20-foot standard | 28,200 kg | ~26–27 MT of stone | ~68 slabs (~471 sqm) |
| 40-foot standard | 28,800 kg | ~27–28 MT of stone | ~70 slabs (~484 sqm) |
For USA shipments, experienced exporters load only 19.9 MT (44,000 lbs) to comply with US highway weight regulations. For European destinations, 24–27 MT is typical. Always confirm the planned gross weight with your supplier before finalising the order quantity.
Import Duties by Destination Country
Duties apply to worked stone (HS Chapter 68 — slabs, tiles, cut stone). Raw blocks (HS Chapter 25) have different, usually lower rates. Always confirm the exact HS subheading with your customs broker.
| Country | Duty on Worked Stone (Ch.68) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| UAE | 5% customs + 5% VAT on (CIF + duty) | Jebel Ali Free Zone goods are exempt until mainland entry |
| Australia | 0% on most stone categories | ECTA (India-Australia trade agreement) may further reduce some rates |
| EU | 2–4% depending on HS subheading | Check TARIC for exact code; EU-India trade talks ongoing |
| UK | Varies; check current DCTS | Some India DCTS preferences under review; 20% VAT on import value |
| USA | Approximately 18% effective (as of 2026) | Base rate was 3.7–5.1% pre-2025; reciprocal tariff escalation changed this significantly — verify current rate with US customs broker before ordering |
| Saudi Arabia | 5% GCC standard + SASO certificate required | Saudi Standards Authority certification needed for certain stone products |
USA buyers: verify the current tariff before ordering
The US-India tariff situation changed significantly in 2025. The effective rate on Indian stone as of early 2026 is substantially higher than the historical 0–5% range. Get a current classification ruling from a licensed US customs broker before committing to an order — the difference between the old rate and the new one can change your landed cost materially.
